My Life In Tracks: After The Eulogy by BoySetsFire
Since its release,
When it came out in 2000, After the Eulogy was unlike anything else. I was traveling alone for the first time, hitting conventions across the country, and the long, late-night drives were fucking brutal. Staying awake meant dumping ice water on my crotch and cranking BoySetsFire to full volume at 3am, yelling along with Nathan Gray, trying to keep from falling asleep at the wheel. I've listened to this album at least x1000 times. The album’s raw energy, aggression and melody, made it feel like more than music, it was survival, a statement of purpose.
What keeps pulling me back is the tension between its fury and optimism. Nathan Gray’s vocals are a force of nature, shifting from screams to melodies with ease. Tracks like “Rookie” and “My Life in the Knife Trade” are deeply personal, while “(Compassion) As Skull Fragments on the Wall” delivers an unrelenting critique of societal issues. Singing in my band Romero at the time, I’d find myself channeling Nathan’s intensity every time I took the mic.
Even now, After the Eulogy is my go to when I feel stuck or overwhelmed, especially since Elsa’s passing. It’s more than a catharsis; it’s a call to action, reminding me that frustration can be transformed into something beautiful. Tracks like “Handful of Redemption” and “Resection” are the sparks I need to keep moving forward.
This album will always be in my rotation, though my wife absolutely can’t stand it (sorry Sarah). But for me, it’s timeless. What albums have stuck with you over the years? I’d love to hear the music that’s soundtracked your life.
